Bicycling Satori

  • A Zen teacher saw five of his students returning from the market, riding their bicycles. When they arrived at the monastery and had dismounted, the teacher asked the students, "Why are you riding your bicycles?"

The first student replied, "The bicycle is carrying the sack of potatoes. I am glad that I do not have to carry them on my back!" The teacher praised the first student, "You are a smart boy! When you grow old, you will not walk hunched over like I do."

The second student replied, "I love to watch the trees and fields pass by as I roll down the path!" The teacher commended the second student, "Your eyes are open, and you see the world."

The third student replied, "When I ride my bicycle, I am content to chant nam myoho renge kyo." The teacher gave praise to the third student, "Your mind will roll with the ease of a newly trued wheel."

The fourth student replied, "Riding my bicycle, I live in harmony with all sentient beings." The teacher was pleased, and said to the fourth student, "You are riding on the golden path of non-harming."

The fifth student replied, "I ride my bicycle to ride my bicycle." The teacher sat at the feet of the fifth student and said, "I am your student!"

The Rider

Stuart Larry David likes to quote from The Rider:

"Racing is licking your opponent’s plate clean before starting on your own."
That's but one memorable line from the best cycling book ever written. Why is it the best?
  1. It reflects the experience of a suffering on a bike better than any prose should.
  2. Lance isn't in it.
  3. The author, Tim Krabbe, knows about the joys of suffering in an intimate way.
  4. It takes place at a time when racing was all about effort and guile, and not about the bike.
  5. It puts you there, in the saddle, climbing European cols.

    Aero

Roues Artisanales cuts through the marketing crap, heads to the wind tunnel, and decides which wheels are most aero of all.

    The big winner: Zipp 808
And, the big loser: Mavic. Across the board. Especially the R-Sys.

    Winter Camp

Or if you're a pro and aren't in Qatar or Australia, you might be in Mallorca.

    Tour of Qatar

A common sight early in the cycling season: Boonen winning yet another stage of the Tour of Qatar.

    Slipstream Felt

Maybe I'm just into argyle these days, but I kind of dig this.

    Lose those unsightly cables

Or at least get 'em out of view. Word is, Shimano is revamping their Dura Ace STI levers and rerouting the cables under the bar tape. Among other things.

    Back on it

Bad weather and travel have conspired to keep me off my bike the last couple of weeks, but yesterday I managed to get in about 28 miles. My fitness clearly isn't what I'd like it to be; I started out sucking wind and kept it up throughout the entire ride. Worse, my legs felt weak.

But hey, it's winter so I'm not worrying too much about it. I'll lift some weights this afternoon, and look forward to a spring training camp that's finally come together. One week in Deland, FL, with nothing to do but ride 50-70 miles a day.

Used my cell phone to capture some video at today's Bur-Mil 'cross race. Here it is, hastily edited and posted for your amusement:
