Triad Cycling Info Site
A new project of mine: The Triad Cycling site.
It's in the very early stages, and is designed to complement the Triad Ride List.

The first student replied, "The bicycle is carrying the sack of potatoes. I am glad that I do not have to carry them on my back!" The teacher praised the first student, "You are a smart boy! When you grow old, you will not walk hunched over like I do."
The second student replied, "I love to watch the trees and fields pass by as I roll down the path!" The teacher commended the second student, "Your eyes are open, and you see the world."
The third student replied, "When I ride my bicycle, I am content to chant nam myoho renge kyo." The teacher gave praise to the third student, "Your mind will roll with the ease of a newly trued wheel."
The fourth student replied, "Riding my bicycle, I live in harmony with all sentient beings." The teacher was pleased, and said to the fourth student, "You are riding on the golden path of non-harming."
The fifth student replied, "I ride my bicycle to ride my bicycle." The teacher sat at the feet of the fifth student and said, "I am your student!"

GVC meeting tonight. We had a smaller than expected turnout, which was a shame because the presentation was excellent. Erik Saunders, Time Sport USA rep, ex-pro, and manager of the Time Pro Cycling team showed up and talked about the ins and outs of running a development team. To paraphrase, it's about giving young riders an alternative to growing angry and bitter about sleeping in a car. Good stuff.
We also got a chance to ogle Time bikes, pedals, and the new shoes. I got my first up-close look at a VXRS Ulteam. Very impressive.

During the GVC's recent holiday party we asked for donations for Toys for Tots. Tonight I delivered a carload (or two grocery cart loads) of donated toys. Local cyclists are a generous lot.

From the News-Record:
A Greensboro woman who struck and killed two bicyclists riding in a
charity event last month has been charged with reckless homicide,
authorities said.
The Roaming Ride is no more. There's been no formal announcement; this is the closest thing to that. Why the cancellation? The combination of too many people and bad habits made the ride more dangerous than it should be. Plus, a few folks couldn't get along with the idea that it was an easy group ride, and had to spend their time off the front. To prove what? I have no idea.

Over the next week I'm riding but not blogging.
As noted over at the work blog I'm thinking of returning in '07 with a new blog. Stay tuned.
Time to get back on the bike. My aching pelvis doesn't hurt quite so much anymore -- very little, in fact -- and though my ribs are a different story (still sore), I've decided it's time to venture back out on the bike. Weather permitting, I'll ride this Saturday.
Gotta get some miles in so I can be ready for the Polar Bear Ride (PDF).

So far I've been fortunate to escape any cycling injuries, but last night my lucky streak ran out. About three miles from the end of an informal show and go ride, one of the guys in our paceline of five dropped off the road, lost control, tried to save it and then all hell broke loose.
I remember thinking this wasn't going to end well. My next thoughts were that I was on the ground, I couldn't figure out why, and I knew that I was hurting. Fast forward through all the boring details of getting to the emergency room -- the bottom line is that I have a pelvic fracture and contused ribs. That means no more riding for 6-8 weeks.
I hit my head hard, and have a crushed helmet to show for it. And the bike? I haven't had a chance to look at it yet.
Saturday's ride was a 55 mile cruise from Shannon Hills to Level Cross, Red Cross, Pleasant Garden, and back. Plenty of wind, but other than losing our ride leader - literally losing him - at the 40 mile mark, the ride was smooth sailing.
Semi-clear skies were in today's forecast so I was surprised to wake to lots of clouds. On the way to the holiday show-and-go at Harris-Teeter, I passed through minor showers. But the rain didn't really start falling until the crowd clipped in and started rolling. Routes of 34 and 47 miles were planned but no one really committed one way or another. So off we went.
Windy, chilly conditions seemed to force the group to opt for a shorter ride - but again, no one really committed one way or another. We just kept rolling, making up a route as we went, occasionally regrouping. In the end we finished with 35 miles.
Next weekend: The Tour to Tanglewood. It's a fundraiser for a very worthy cause. Consider making a donation. I'll be out there with a few thousand other folks, riding about 150 miles over the weekend.

We had a crowd for tonight's Roaming Ride – maybe 18 cyclists, including some new folks and one I hadn't seen in a while.
Sundown is creeping up on us so we rode a shorter route than usual and ended up with 27.5 miles. Next week we'll give in to the changing seasons and move the ride to 5:30.
After a string of sub-100 mile weeks I'm not exactly looking forward to this weekend's foray to Mt. Mitchell. I don't think fun will enter into this ride. Survival is a more appropriate word.
Stay tuned for a full report.
